The meeting between researchers of many different backgrounds has become very important in the development of multidisciplinary science. Building on the success of the previous workshops held on September 2 2014, and on September 9, 2015, we will hold the third IAMS-YCU Autumn Workshop on Sept 6 2016. We will have graduate students from Department of Materials System Science (chemistry and physics) of Yokohama City University of Japan visit the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences, Academia Sinica Taiwan to participate in this workshop. In this workshop we will have oral presentations by students and young researchers from both sides, as well as a poster session. With this interaction we hope to exchange research ideas and enrich collaborations. We take this opportunity to encourage interested researchers to participate in this workshop.

This Workshop is the third in series held in Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences, Academia Sinica, to provide a great opportunity to discuss the most relevant issues in new-generation photovoltaics—advanced material designs, new processing methods, device characterization, and large-scale fabrication—and invited several leading researchers to share their scientific views in these aspects. The workshop included five invited lectures, five contributed talks.

In the early 1980s, the founders of the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences (IAMS), including Prof. Yuan. T. Lee, had the vision to see the great potential of advanced instruments in elucidating the structures of atoms and molecules and the dynamics of the interaction among atoms and molecules. They proposed to establish IAMS in the Academia Sinica. A preparatory office was initiated in 1982. After efforts of more than 10 years, IAMS was formerly inaugurated in 1995 as a full-fledged Institute in the Academia Sinica. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of IAMS, a symposium focused on the field of reaction dynamics is being organized. About 10 international and 10 domestic invited speakers will present their newest works. There will also be a poster session and other activities. We expect sharing of new advances in the field, intense and warm discussion, and possibility of future collaboration in this symposium.

International Symposium on Frontiers in Bioimaging will be held at the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences (IAMS), Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan on October 26 and 27, 2015. This symposium is part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of IAMS. In the Symposium, we will have prestigious scientists and researchers presenting their recent work about investigating biology and medical sciences using novel imaging techniques. Topics include understanding structures and functions of biomolecules at the molecular scale by using cutting-edge electron microscopy and super-resolution optical microscopy, development and application of advanced labels and nanoprobes for imaging and sensing, revealing rapid dynamics in biosystems by high-speed three-dimensional optical microscopy, and also studying biomedical sciences by state-of-the-art MRI techniques. There will be a poster session on October 26, and we encourage you to submit an abstract of your research results. “Best Poster Award” will be attributed to the best posters presented. Poster submission and registration of the Symposium are free.

The call for an efficient and affordable renewable source of energy has never been more pronounce than it was a decade ago. Today, new advances in technology have driven us in search of better and sustainable sources of energy to fuel these new developments. In decades of research, it has come to an accepted consensus that there is no one source of renewable energy that can replace the current one and no specific type can provide all of our energy demands for the future. As such, this workshop on renewable energies tackles two of the promising energy sources—thermoelectrics and photovoltaics—that support a sustainable future.

Contemporary atomic and optical physics has been experiencing breathtaking renaissance due to the recent advances on unprecedented control of the atomic and light wavepackets. The advancements of optics on the one hand has led to temporal resolution of attosecond level and frequency resolution of 10-18 level, and on the other hand its light intensity has reached up to petawatt for high-field physics and down to that of single photon for quantum optics studies and quantum information applications. On atomic physics, laser cooling and atom trapping has led to creation of dilute atomic quantum fluids, noticeably Bose-Einstein condensates and degenerate Fermi gases with well controlled atomic interactions for investigation on many-body dynamics toward simulations of exotic quantum matter. In this symposium we will brings together renowned scholars in these exciting fields to report their recent researches. We hope this symposium can attract more researchers and students to participate in these fields, and can initiate more international collaboration between frontier researchers. The symposium will be held on July 8-10, 2015 with the first two days at Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences (IAMS) in Taipei and the last day at National Center for Theoretical Sciences (NCTS) in Hsinchu. It is organized by both institutes. The symposium in Taipei is also to celebrate the 20th anniversary of IAMS.

ACCMS was established in 2000 to nurture and promote research and development activities in computational materials in Asian countries. The first Asian Consortium on Computational Materials Science (ACCMS-1) was successfully held in Bangalore, India in 2001. Then, the meeting was held in Russia (Novosibirsk, ACCMS-2 2004), China (Beijing, ACCMS-3 2005), Korea (Seoul, ACCMS-4 2007), Vietnam (Hanoi, ACCMS-5 2009), Singapore (ACCMS-6 2011), and Thailand (Nakhon Ratchasima, ACCMS-7 2013). In the last ACCMS-7, more than 240 participants from 24 countries enjoyed academic discussions and nature circumstances in Thailand. ACCMS-8 will continue the tradition of ACCMS. In ACCMS-8, computational physicists, chemists and material scientists will gather to discuss important issues and to share essential progresses in various fields such as biotechnology, catalysis, spintronics, electron transport, thermoelectric effect, energy applications, and etc. We hope that you will take the opportunity to network with new acquaintances, and to build upon those relationships that have already been established. We look forward to welcoming our friends and colleagues from Asia, as well as other parts of the world.
