Dr. Andy Kung earned his B.S.E.E. degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1969, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering in 1970 and 1973 respectively from the Stanford University.  He joined the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory of the University of California as a staff scientist in 1975, spent the years from 1980 to 1989 to direct the NSF San Francisco Laser Center, and was a senior staff scientist at LBL when he left to become a research fellow at the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences of the Academia Sinica in Taiwan in 1994.

Dr. Kung is one of the world's leading experts in the generation and use of vacuum ultraviolet (vuv) radiation.  He pioneered the development of harmonic generation and wave mixing in inert gases to generate vuv light. His innovative use of a pulsed gas beam significantly simplified the generation and application of vuv radiation below the LiF cut-off of 104 nm.  The method is now widely used.  Gas-phase laser plasma generation and most high harmonic generation schemes employ the pulsed beam approach to make vuv light and soft x-ray radiation from femtosecond lasers.

Since 1995, Dr. Kung has focused his efforts to develop a high-resolution high power tunable laser system and new types of all-solid-state tunable light sources and to explore applications with these light sources.  With his newly developed laser sources, he has revived old applications and enabled new one, making significant contributions in extremely-sensitive photoacoustic trace gas detection, in electromagnetically-induced molecular modulation, and in laser-synchrotron-radiation two-photon ionization spectroscopy.  His current research interests are in developing attosecond science and technology using molecular modulation in hydrogen, applying compact all-solid-state lasers

 and nonlinear optical imaging to elucidate structure and dynamics in biological systems, and investigating novel optical processes in nonlinear photonic crystals.

            Dr. Kung is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and of the Optical Society of America, a life member of the Overseas Chinese Physicists Association, and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers of the United States of America.  He is a three time recipient of the Outstanding Scholars Award of the Foundation for the Advancement of Outstanding Scholarship in Taiwan.
