Message from the Director

Welcome to the website of the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences (IAMS).

Academia Sinica established the Preparatory Office for IAMS in September of 1982 based on the recommendation of Prof. Yuan-Tseh Lee and several well-known scientists.  Before and after its official inauguration in 1995, the Institute has been dedicated to basic research related to atomic and molecular sciences.  Thanks to the strong leadership of the former directors (Dr. C. T. Chang, Dr. S. H. Lin, and K. P. Liu), the insightful guidance of the advisory boards, and the increasing support from the people of Taiwan, the Institute has prospered and matured over the past two decades, and is now an internationally recognized research institution.  Our deepest gratitude goes to the founders and friends of IAMS for their efforts and commitments.

We currently have 27 faculties, 9 adjunct faculties from National Taiwan, Chao Tung, or Taiwan Normal University, and 15 administrative/technical members.  Our research activities have been focused on chemical dynamics and spectroscopy, advanced materials and surface science, biophysics and bio-analytical technology, and atomic physics and optical science.  In recent years, the Institute has made cutting-edge contributions in crossed molecular beam reaction dynamics and significant progresses in the fabrication and the characterization of advanced nanomaterials.  While committed to sustaining excellence in the existing programs and elevating our international stature, we are attempting to establish interdisciplinary programs that will enable the interface between chemistry/physics with biology, nanoscience, and information technology, which are considered the most important science and technology of the 21st century.  To meet this grand challenge, we have launched four frontier research initiatives: (i) ultra-fast processes in light-harvesting photo-systems, (ii) physics in a extremely high laser field, (iii) application of advanced optical spectroscopy and mass spectrometry in biochemistry and biophysics, and (iv) laser cooling of atoms and molecules.  We have high expectations on these frontier research programs.

IAMS is an exciting and challenging international institution to work and Taiwan is a friendly country to visit or live.  We welcome you to explore a career or establish collaboration with us.  Please contact my colleagues or me for further information.
