The Academia Sinica is the highest ranking scientific research institution in the Republic of China. It has 24 institutes, 23 of which are located on a beautiful campus in Nankang district in the north-eastern side of Taipei City, about 20-30 minutes from city center. The main administration, a conference center, a visitors' housing complex, and a northern style Chinese restaurant are also located here. The Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences is co-located with the National Taiwan University, 30 minutes from the main campus.
The city of Taipei is a big, booming city of 2.7 million people (Taiwan's population: 21 million). It is the economic, cultural, political and trendsetting heart of the island, and is a must visit place for first time visitors. Taipei's National Palace Museum ranks as one of the four best museums in the world, in a class with the Louvre, British Museum, and Metropolitan Museum of art. It has the world's largest collection of Chinese artefacts covering over 5000 years of China's history. There are many other notable places to visit, including the Chiang Kaishek Memorial, the Presidential Palace, Snake Alley, Lungshan Temple and Confucius Temple. Domestic flights leave from Taipei airport, only minutes from downtown. There are many daily flights to all major cities on the island and to main sightseeing spots.

The local currency is NT dollars. There is a foreign exchange window in the customs area upon your arrival in Taiwan. The present exchange rate is 1USD=31.6 NTD. Credit cards are accepted at major department stores and souvenir shops.
Taipei lies right on the major air routes between Japan and Hong Kong. There are numerous daily flights on many of the major airlines, including locally owned China Airlines and EVA Airways, to and from the USA and Europe.
Taipei's CKS International Airport is about 50 km from city center. Information regarding organized transportation between the airport and the conference site will be available with the advance program.
It is advisable that participants take out adequate travel and health insurance before leaving their countries.
Citizens of Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, UK and USA do not require a visa for stays of 14 days or less to Taiwan, if they posses a passport with at least a six-month validity remaining and an onward or return ticket. Citizens of other countries should consult the nearest Taiwan representative office for the latest visa requirements.
For foreign participants, especially young researchers, the organizing committee hopes to be able to provide some financial support for a limited number of participants. To obtain financial support, foreign participants are requested to send in their resumes and list of publications.
Day tours to local attractions and sightseeing locations in northern part of the island will be scheduled for sign-up during the period of the meeting. |
